The Paperblanks Daphnis Ultra Lined Journal is a beautifully crafted notebook offering a generous writing space in the Ultra format. Measuring 175mm wide, 225mm high and 12mm deep, it provides an ideal layout for longer entries, creative writing or detailed note taking. Inside, it features 176 lined pages made from 100gsm smooth, acid-free, FSC-certified text paper. With 25 lines per page and an 8.11mm spacing, the journal offers a clean, comfortable writing experience suitable for both everyday and professional use.

Designed with both durability and flexibility in mind, the softcover features decorative printed cover paper, complemented by cloth headbands and threaded stitching. The Smyth sewn binding allows the journal to open flat, making it easy to write across its pages. Practical features include an elastic band closure for secure storage, a back cover pouch for loose notes or small keepsakes, and a single ribbon marker for page saving.

The Daphnis cover design is inspired by a 1910 French binding created by master bookbinder Émile-Philippe Mercier for an edition of the ancient Greek story Daphnis & Chloe. Written in the 2nd century AD and later made famous by Jacques Amyot’s French translation in 1559, the tale of two young lovers became a cornerstone of European literature. Over the centuries it has inspired countless artistic works, from stage productions to modern novels such as The Princess Bride.

Mercier’s binding reflects a classical approach to book design, featuring symmetrical layouts, intricate detailing and distinctive gilt tooling. Known for his exceptional craftsmanship, Mercier produced gilt work for many esteemed binders of his era before establishing his own workshop. The muted gilding, rich ornamentation and deep teal colour palette chosen for this Paperblanks edition honour the story’s Mediterranean setting and the romantic spirit of its protagonists.
